Justin Peter Löwenbräu[2] Griffin Sr., or more commonly known as just Peter, is the main protagonist of Family Guy. He is the patriarch of the Griffin Family, and is voiced by Seth MacFarlane.

About[edit | edit source]

Intelligence[edit | edit source]

Peter is very dumb. He enjoys very crude humor, and spends most of his time either drinking beer, watching television, or doing both at the same time. He is very childlike in nature, often laughing at lowbrow things such as farting, and just generally showing immature behavior, such as starting a TV program which is nothing but famous "side-boobs" in the media[3]. Though the majority of the time, his behavior is immature, he has also been shown to be plain unintelligent, such as attempting to make his late son, Peter Griffin, Jr., stop crying by shaking him (which accidentally kills him)[4].

Some reasoning behind this is that it isn't his fault he acts dumb, but is due to his low IQ, which is placed below mental illness-level[5].

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Peter is dangerously overweight. He wears glasses, and commonly wears a white t-shirt and green pants (with a belt).

Family[edit | edit source]

Peter is married to Lois Griffin. Together, they have had three children: Meg Griffin, Chris Griffin, and Stewie Griffin. It was once implied that they had a fourth child named Peter Griffin Jr., who died. Peter also owns a dog (who happens to be his best friend), Brian Griffin.

Peter's marriage with Lois seems to be very strong, despite the fact that Peter's wacky antics are often frustrating her. Peter loves Lois, although he always dislikes it when she is "right" and he is "wrong". He once almost cheated on Lois, but it turned out the partner he was having an affair with was Lois after all[6].

Meg, Peter's oldest child, is often seen being subject to abuse by Peter. On the surface, he doesn't appear to care much about her. However, at times when she is in great danger, he will become overprotective of her[7], showing he truly does care for her after all. He will often say, "Shut up, Meg." when she starts talking, or will occasionally make a farting noise when her name is said[8]. He once told her she doesn't matter[9].

Chris, Peter's middle child, seems to have a very strained relationship with his father. While Peter does clearly care for him, he often seems to neglect him/forget about him. He wasn't aware that Chris wanted to be an artist[10], and once even tried to marry Chris[11], just to make money.

Stewie, Peter's youngest child, doesn't seem to have much of a relationship with Peter. He often won't even call Peter "dad", and just usually refers to him as "the fat man". Once, however, they bonded very closely, seemingly being best friends. They even took a trip to Disney World[12].

Brian, Peter's dog, acts as his best friend for the majority of the series. Although later seasons have focused more on the relationship between Brian and Stewie, him and Peter's relationship is still very strong/evident. Like Lois, Brian will often have to put up with Peter's strange antics, and will often act as the voice of reason for Peter (though he almost never is listened to). He will often be condescending towards Peter, however they are still very close friends.

Employment[edit | edit source]

Peter was formerly employed at the Happy-Go-Lucky Toys factory. He was fired many times, until he eventually got a job in the shipping department of the Pawtucket Brewery.

Throughout the series, however, he has had many odd jobs, although most of them are for cutaway jokes.

Voice[edit | edit source]

Peter is voiced by the series' creator, Seth MacFarlane.

He based his voice on a security guard he once knew[13], as well as several people he knew growing up.

However, MacFarlane is not the only person to voice Peter on the show. For brief moments, he has also been voiced by Patrick Stewart[14], Seth Rogen[15], and Jameson Yang[16].
